Shopify Email Marketing: The App Is Not Why It Works

Every Shopify email marketing app will make you money if the flows behind it are built, and none will if they are not. We build the flows. As a Shopify email marketing agency, we work in Klaviyo, Shopify Email, or whatever already suits your store.

Shopify email marketing flows that earn revenue on their own, regardless of platform
Trusted by Shopify brands
The channel you own

What is Shopify email marketing, and how is it different?

Email is the only channel you own. No algorithm decides who sees it, no auction sets the price, and it does not stop the moment you stop paying.

What makes Shopify email marketing different from a newsletter is that most of the revenue comes from messages nobody schedules. Someone abandons a cart, a delivery lands, a regular buyer goes quiet for 60 days. Those triggers fire on their own, and on a mature store they typically out-earn the campaigns you send by hand.

Which is why comparing Shopify email marketing apps is rarely the decision people think it is. Most merchants spend weeks comparing, install one, switch on three flows, and stop. The app was never the constraint. Klaviyo, Shopify Email and Omnisend will all make you money if the flows behind them are built, and none of them will if they are not. Email marketing on Shopify is an infrastructure job wearing a software costume.

Shopify email marketing revenue comes mostly from automated flows, not scheduled campaigns
The four pillars

Every engagement covers four pillars

01/04

Audit and platform fit

Every existing flow tested, deliverability checked, and an honest read on whether your current platform is worth what it costs.

What changes You find out what is broken and whether you are overpaying before anything is rebuilt.
02/04

Flows

Welcome, cart and browse abandonment, post-purchase, replenishment, winback, built and wired to real store events.

What changes Revenue arrives without anyone scheduling a send.
03/04

Campaigns and segments

Launches, promotions and seasonal sends, targeted by what people bought and how they behave rather than blasted to everyone.

What changes Fewer emails, better numbers, fewer unsubscribes.
04/04

Design and copy

On-brand templates and copy written to sell, not to fill space.

What changes Emails your customers recognise before they read the sender name.

Monthly reporting shows revenue by flow and by campaign, not just opens. Most email marketing agency retainers report opens and clicks because those numbers always look fine. Revenue does not always look fine, which is why it is the one worth showing.

Common mistake

Most stores assume the expensive platform is the right one. Sometimes it is not.

Klaviyo is the best ecommerce email platform for most Shopify stores, and as a Klaviyo email marketing agency, it is what we recommend and build in most cases. But it is priced on list size, and plenty of stores are paying for segmentation depth they will never use.

Most stores pick the platform everyone recommends, grow the list, and accept the rising bill, assuming migrating will cost revenue and judging email on open rate. We work out what your store actually needs from it, check whether the features justify the tier, test a migration properly before deciding, and judge email on revenue per recipient.

We moved Monster Piercing off Klaviyo onto Shopify Email. Sales rose 335%, and their bill dropped $6,600 a year. That was the right answer for that store. For Mountainside Medical, Klaviyo was the right answer, and it produced $370K in a single BFCM. The platform is a decision, not a default, and an agency that only knows one tool cannot make it for you.

Choosing an email platform based on what your store needs, not what is most expensive
Our own tooling

We build Shopify apps, which is why we care where your email data comes from

Webrex runs nine apps on the Shopify App Store used by over 300,000 merchants. Two of them shape what your email programme can do.

We work in your platform, not ours. Klaviyo, Shopify Email, Omnisend, Mailchimp, or Brevo, in your account, and you keep everything if we stop working together. That is the difference between a full-service email marketing agency and one that rents you access to its own stack.

Our process

The Webrex Growth Framework

1
Phase 01

Audit

Every flow tested with a real order. Deliverability checked. Revenue attributed per flow so you see what is earning and what is decorative. You get the findings either way.

2
Phase 02

Prioritise

The gaps ranked by what they are worth. Usually cart and post-purchase first, because they are closest to money.

3
Phase 03

Build

Flows built and tested end to end, templates designed, copy written, segments defined. Everything goes live in your account.

4
Phase 04

Refine

Monthly reporting on revenue per flow, subject line and timing tests, and new flows added as the store grows.

Proof, not promises

Real stores, real numbers

Fit check

Is this a fit?

The best email marketing agency for your store is the one that will tell you when you do not need them. Plenty of stores running email marketing Shopify-side can get the first three flows live themselves. Here is where we are useful and where we are not.

Good fit if you

  • Have traffic and sales, but email is a small share of revenue
  • Are running a welcome flow and a cart flow and nothing else
  • Have a list you have been growing and never properly used
  • Suspect you are overpaying for your platform and want a straight answer

Not a fit if you

  • Have almost no list and no traffic to build one. Fix that first, and email will be worth more later
  • Want cold outreach or bought lists. We do not do it, and it will damage your deliverability
  • Sell something bought once in a decade, where there is no repeat behaviour to work with
  • Want volume. More sends is not the strategy, and it is how lists get burned

If you are in the second list, say so on the call. We will tell you what we would do instead.

Straight answers

Common questions

01Why are my Klaviyo emails going to spam?
Almost always one of three things. Your domain is not authenticated, so mailbox providers cannot verify you sent it. You are mailing people who stopped opening months ago, which tells Gmail your list is stale. Or you imported a bought list and burned your reputation in one go. Check authentication first; it takes an afternoon and fixes most cases. Then stop mailing anyone with no opens in 90 days.
02How to improve email deliverability in Klaviyo?
Authenticate your sending domain, then clean the list. Suppress no-opens past 90 days, remove hard bounces immediately, never import a list you did not collect. Recovering or starting fresh, warm up gradually. Watch bounce and complaint rates in Klaviyo's deliverability tab, not open rate, which stopped being reliable when Apple began pre-loading images. This is a list hygiene problem far more often than a content problem.
03What causes Klaviyo emails to land in the promotions tab?
Gmail sorts on signals, not one switch. Heavy image-to-text ratios, multiple tracking links, promotional subject lines, and low engagement from that recipient all push you there. Promotions is not a penalty and not the same as spam. Plenty of brands earn well from it, because that is where people go when they are ready to shop. If you want Primary, the route is engagement, not plain-text tricks, which usually cost more in conversion than they gain in placement.
04What is an abandoned cart email?
An automated message to someone who added a product and left without buying. It is the highest-earning flow on most Shopify stores, because the person already chose the product. Three emails work: a reminder within an hour, a nudge answering the likely objection at 24 hours, a final one at 72 hours. Discount in the last one, if at all, since offering money off immediately trains people to abandon carts on purpose.
05What is the best email marketing app for Shopify?
Klaviyo for most stores, because the segmentation and Shopify integration are the strongest available. Shopify Email if your needs are simpler and you would rather not pay for depth you will not use. Omnisend if SMS matters as much as email. We have moved a client off Klaviyo and grown their sales 335% while cutting the bill, so this is a real question. The honest version: the best app is whichever one you will actually build proper flows in.
06Shopify Email vs Mailchimp, which is better?
Shopify Email, in almost every case. It reads your store data natively, triggers on real order events, and costs nothing until you send at volume. Mailchimp was built for general marketing lists, and its Shopify integration has been unreliable for years. If you are on Mailchimp and it works, there is no emergency. If you are choosing today, do not start there.
07How much does Shopify email marketing cost?
Two separate costs. The platform is free on Shopify Email up to a send limit, and priced on list size with Klaviyo. Then the work, which is where the value sits. Our management starts at £1,500/month, or £3,000 for full service with advanced segmentation and testing. A store paying a big platform bill and nothing for strategy usually earns less than one doing the reverse.
08What list size do you need?
Any. A few hundred to several hundred thousand. Small lists often see the biggest percentage gains, because usually nothing is set up at all.
09Do you write and design the emails?
Yes, both. On-brand templates, copy written to sell. You approve before anything is sent.
10Can you migrate us from another platform?
Yes. List, templates, flows, and integrations, with no downtime or data loss. We will also tell you if migrating is not worth it.
11How do you measure it?
Revenue per flow and per campaign, repeat purchase rate, and email's share of total revenue. Open rate is a diagnostic, not a result.
12Do you work with Shopify Plus?
Yes. A large share of our email clients are Plus, and we use the Plus checkout and Flow integrations where they help.
